3rd International Holcim Forum to focus on “Re-Inventing Construction”

Zurich / Switzerland - December 15, 2009 - Experts from all continents will meet in Mexico City at the 3rd International Holcim Forum for Sustainable Construction in April 2010. The conference for academics and professionals from architecture, civil engineering, urban planning, natural and social sciences will advance concepts on how construction needs to be re-invented and aligned with principles of sustainable development. Limited places are available – registration is possible until the end of January 2010.

Book announcement - Green factory in Sri Lanka

Zurich / Switzerland – November 23, 2009 – The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has published MAS Intimates Thurulie – Clothing factory in Sri Lanka – adding another example of sustainable architecture from around the world to its series of monographs. The book explains how within 13 months MAS Intimates created a building that respects the balance between environmental, social, and economic performance whilst also providing a functionally, culturally, and aesthetically appropriate response to its unique setting.

Sustainable construction beyond the green

Zurich / Switzerland – August 24, 2009 – The USD 2 million Holcim Awards encourage best practice and inspire architects, engineers and developers to adopt sustainable parameters for their building projects. The Holcim Awards has completed its second three-year cycle with Global prize hand-over ceremonies in Fez (Morocco), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Beijing (China) and San Francisco (USA). The diversity of the winning projects shows that world-class sustainable construction solutions not only consider environmental impact – but also deliver economic and social performance as well as architectural quality and provide break-throughs that can be effectively transferred to other projects.

Concrete solution for coral reefs on display at Mainau exhibition

Zurich / Switzerland - July 6, 2009 - Discoveries 2009 – Water is an engaging exhibition on the economic, environmental and social importance of water and is open to the public until the end of August 2009. The exhibition shows how asking questions leads to groundbreaking developments and exciting progress, framed by the theme of water. The Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction pavilion showcases a project to accelerate the cultivation of corals on starfish shaped concrete structures. The Holcim Awards prize-winning project demonstrates a sustainable way to preserve maritime biodiversity and increase living quality for local residents.
