Kazuo Iwamura

Kazuo Iwamura is principal and founder of Iwamura Atelier of Tokyo. The practice focuses upon urban and architectural research, design, implementation and consulting, based on a holistic environmental design approach by networking related experts or organizations according to project features.

He is also a Professor at the Faculty of Environmental & Information Studies, Musashi Institute of Technology, Yokohama, with a special interest is environmental design for a sustainable society.

Kazuo Iwamura studied architecture at Waseda University, Tokyo and also in Paris after receiving a French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Scholarship.

He worked in urban and architectural design at Agence Candilis in Paris and Athens (1974-77), and co-founded AG5 (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Architektur und Städtebau) (1977-80) implementing the “Baubiologie” (Building and Biology) approach to town planning in Germany and the Middle East.

He is immediate past Vice-president of the Japan Institute of Architects, Councilor of the International Union of Architects (UIA), Co-direct of the UIA work program, Architecture for a Sustainable Future, and a member of the board of directors of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), and Director of the ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council Asia) Committee on Green and Sustainable Architecture.

Kazuo Iwamura was awarded the World Habitat Award in 2002 by UN-Habitat, recognized by the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2003 for a series of works regarding “Environmentally Symbiotic Housing”. His written works include Symbiotic Housing A-Z (1998), Glocal Document 2000, Forefront of Sustainable Architecture (2000), Towards Architecture for a Global Environment (2002) Asian Breezes (2005), Architecture for a Sustainable Future (2005), and many others.
