Rahul Mehrotra is principal of architecture firm Rahul Mehrotra Associates of Mumbai, India and is Professor of Urban Design and Planning and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) in Cambridge, Mass., USA.

His architectural firm has designed many projects including LMW Corporate Office and D.J. Institute of Management in Coimbatore, an orphanage in Mumbai, an extension to the Prince of Wales Museum and a number of houses, factories and institutional buildings around Mumbai.

The architectural works of Rahul Mehrotra Associates have been exhibited at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London, the Contemporary Art Gallery in Ankara, Turkey, the Institut Français d’ Architecture, Paris, the Arts Biennale in Shanghai, and elsewhere. The firm recently finished a campus for Magic Bus (an NGO that works with street children), the restoration of the Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, and (with the Taj Mahal Conservation Collaborative) a conservation master plan for the Taj Mahal. The firm is currently working on a master plan for the conservation of the historic site of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and on a village for 100 elephants and their caretakers in Jaipur.

Rahul Mehrotra studied at the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad, India, and the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, USA. In 1995, he founded The Bombay Collaborative, an architectural conservation practice which also acts as a consultant to the Mumbai Environmental Action Group, INTACH, the Orient Foundation, and various neighborhood and citizens groups in Mumbai.

Rahul Mehrotra has written and lectured extensively on architecture, conservation and urban planning issues related to Mumbai. He was formerly Associate Professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, USA.

His co-authored Bombay: The Cities Within, which covers the city’s urban history from the 1600s to the present; Banganga: Sacred Tank; Public Places Bombay; Anchoring a City Line; and Bombay to Mumbai: Changing Perspectives. He has also co-authored Conserving an Image Center: The Fort Precinct in Bombay; based on this study and its recommendations, the historic Fort area was declared a conservation precinct in 1995.

Rahul Mehrotra moderated the workshop Informal Urbanism: between sanctioned and shadow orders at the Holcim Forum 2007 in Shanghai.
